19-year-old transgender teen rakes in $50 million from NFT salesIn March 2021, digital artist Beeple made headlines after his NFT collection sold for $69.3 million. The industry has since gained massive patronage, with many people, including non-artists cashing out with digital collectibles. Victor Langlois, a 19-year-old transgender artist, is one of the latest to rake in millions.
Langlois has earned $50 million in less than a year by selling his NFT artworks. The 19-year-old first gained popularity after selling physical artwork and NFTs titled “Hello, I’m Victor” and “This Is My Life” for $2.16 million at Christie’s auction house in New York. Both artworks are said to explore Victor’s childhood and gender transition from ages 14 to 18.
Langlois, also known as FEWOCiOUS, has gained much prominence, and the sales of his digital artwork have boomed since the first sale. He sold an artwork worth $20 million within 24 hours of minting last April. It was the third-largest sale of NFTs in the history of the Nifty Gateway marketplace as of then.
According to him, the NFT trade has taught him that art isn’t necessarily still painting.
In an interview with American men’s magazine Esquire, Langlois stated that he was initially afraid to appear as a transgender person and was criticized whenever he was found involved in the artwork. Speaking of his grandmother, he said:
I think she struggled so much that she just wanted security. To see me wanting to pursue art, she was like: ‘What? Be a lawyer.’ Which I understand. But it hurt when she would say, ‘Your art is ugly and that’s why you can’t do it.
Non-fungible tokens (NFTs) have become quite popular amongst digital artists, and NFTs are helping artists by bringing transparency to the ownership of their digital art.
