China’s holdings of U.S. Treasuries skid to 12-year low; Japan also cuts holdings

Reuters/Gertrude Chavez-Dreyfuss/6-15-2022

“China’s holdings of U.S Treasuries tumbled in April to their lowest since May 2010, data showed on Wednesday, with Chinese investors likely cutting losses as Treasury prices fell after Federal Reserve officials signaled sizable rate hikes to temper soaring inflation.”

USAGOLD note: TIC data has not been a subject of acute interest over the past few years, simply because the Fed filled any gaps left by foreign countries (like China and Japan) exiting the Treasuries market. It is likely to become a matter of greater interest now that the Fed itself has exited the Treasuries market, raising questions as to how the Treasury Department intends to finance excess federal spending.
